Madar (Nouakchott) - The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has announced that, from Monday, October 26, 2026, stops on the traditional transport network serving the university complex will be scrapped, with the campus now served by bus rapid transit (BHNS) lines, a move it said aims to organise university transport and improve services for students.

In a statement, the ministry said the decision covers four lines, including the Taazour and BMD lines, citing the steady rise in student numbers at the University of Nouakchott and growing pressure on transport services.

It said BHNS lines had been extended to the university complex along the main roads, as the first phase of a programme to ensure regular service for students while keeping an acceptable level of transport across the capital's districts.

According to the statement, students can use these lines with a discounted monthly pass of 5,000 old ouguiyas, with more trips at peak hours, while those without a pass pay the social fare applied to citizens. The ministry urged students to understand the measures and respect urban transport rules and public order requirements.

The announcement follows Thursday's student protest in Arafat over the university transport crisis, on the road linking Riyadh to the Madrid bridge, before police dispersed the protesters.
