Madar (Nouakchott) - The presidents' bureau of the opposition coalition "Forces of Salvation" on Thursday elected MP Mohamed Lemine Sidi Maouloud as the coalition's rotating chair, while the leader of the Al Oumrane party, Dr Ahmed Ould Haroune, was chosen as his deputy, replacing the outgoing bureau.

In a press briefing, the coalition said the meeting held to elect the new bureau included an assessment of the performance of the previous leadership and its bureau members, stressing the need to step up opposition work on the ground against the current regime, within the law.

The coalition expressed concern over what it described as the seriousness of the period the country is going through, citing what it considers widespread corruption and repression, a decline in freedoms and a deterioration in democratic values and practices.
