President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani on Thursday launched the second phase of the Nouakchott development programme, with a budget of 115 billion old ouguiyas, after completing part of the first-phase projects, which cost 69 billion ouguiyas, bringing investment across the two phases to 184 billion old ouguiyas.

The second phase includes a series of projects to strengthen public facilities and keep pace with the capital's urban growth, with 510 classrooms and specialised health facilities, including a maternity hospital and emergency and dialysis centres, as well as facilities for treating burns, mental illness and addiction.

On infrastructure, the plan adds 70 kilometres of urban roads and five interchanges at junctions, along with the expansion of water, electricity and sanitation networks and the treatment of stagnant water.

The new investments also cover improved street lighting, the rehabilitation of squares and gardens, upgrades to some sports facilities, the construction of 24 sports pitches, and the creation and rehabilitation of youth spaces.

The first phase covered education, health, roads, water, electricity and sport, including 460 new classrooms and the rehabilitation of 859 others, 68 kilometres of roads and the development of power and street-lighting networks.
