Nouakchott on Thursday hosted a consultative meeting between the Directorate General of Territorial Administration at the Ministry of the Interior, Decentralisation and Local Development and several technical and financial partners, to discuss ways of developing the integrated border management system under the national migration management strategy for 2026-2030.
The meeting, opened by Director General of Territorial Administration Zayed El Adhan Ould Vall Oumm, focused on mechanisms to align government and international efforts and on setting priorities for support and funding to improve the management of border areas, in response to the related security, economic and development challenges.
Ould Vall Oumm said the vast land and maritime spaces of Mauritania, whose borders exceed 5,800 kilometres, make it urgent to develop control and management tools and strengthen coordination with neighbouring countries, praising the European Union's contribution to organising the meeting.
Participants discussed five main areas, led by the modernisation of 82 border crossing points, broader cooperation between neighbouring countries and greater involvement of local residents in managing border areas, as well as better management of the maritime space, the regulation of cross-border trade and economic activity, and shared use of resources.
