Mauritania's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, said his ministry had held field consultations with members of Mauritanian communities in 22 countries to identify their main demands and the difficulties they face abroad.
Speaking on Friday at the opening of the forum of Mauritanian communities in Nouakchott, the minister said the consultations covered consular services, residence, civil documents, legal and social protection, as well as education, preserving identity and organising the communities.
He said the meetings also highlighted expertise, skills and investment capacity that could be used to support the national economy.
He said the exercise lays the groundwork for a national policy more responsive to the needs of Mauritanians abroad and for strengthening their role in development.
