Madar (Nouakchott) - MP Biram Dah Abeid described the country's current situation as dangerous, accusing the ruling majority parties of trying to drag Mauritania into political and economic crises.
In an audio message obtained by Madar, Biram spoke of difficult economic and social conditions, the paralysis of state services, rising unemployment, falling purchasing power and the depreciation of the ouguiya, as well as a lack of justice and widespread favouritism and patronage.
He added that freedoms are in retreat and that prisons are crowded with people holding opinions opposed to the regime, pointing to corruption and impunity, restrictions on freedoms and the questioning of journalists for exercising their freedom of expression.
Biram praised the stance of the Tawassoul party, calling it "formidable" and saying it is in line with that of one of the most represented opposition parties in parliament, which holds the leadership of the opposition.
He called on parties, students and civil society organisations to follow Tawassoul's example in rejecting additional presidential terms, violations of freedoms and breaches of the Constitution.
