Madar (Nouakchott) - The governor of Mauritania's Adrar region on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, launched in Atar local consultation workshops on the Adrar Regional Sustainable Development Acceleration Plan (PADDA), organised over eight days by the Adrar Heritage Association with local stakeholders from the region's four departments: Atar, Chinguetti, Aoujeft and Ouadane, the Mauritanian News Agency reported.

The governor listed the region's main challenges as its desert climate, sand encroachment, low rainfall and salty groundwater, as well as difficulties in using and investing in available resources, particularly oasis farming and cultivation under palm groves.

He added that tourism is the region's second-largest economic resource and has recovered over the past two years thanks to programmes supporting domestic tourism, encouragement of investment in tourism infrastructure such as hotels and guesthouses, and efforts to organise the sector.

The association's president said the workshops aim to set the region's development priorities based on its realities, potential and residents' aspirations.
