Madar (Tripoli) - The Tripoli-based government's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced that a coordination meeting was held at its headquarters in the Libyan capital to advance the implementation of understandings with Algeria on reopening the Ghadames-Debdeb border crossing, the Libya Herald reported on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
The ministry said the meeting followed up on the minutes of the Libyan-Algerian technical experts team tasked with reopening the crossing, signed in Algeria on November 9, 2023, and on the outcomes of the preparatory experts' meeting for the 15th session of the Libyan-Algerian Joint High Executive Committee, signed in Tripoli on January 29, 2026, in which both sides affirmed their determination to begin operations at the crossing before the end of 2026.
The meeting was chaired by Ambassador Ashraf Mohammed Al-Taieb, director of the International Cooperation Department, and attended by representatives of several Libyan sectors and authorities concerned with the crossing. Participants stressed the importance of stronger coordination with the Algerian side, given the crossing's role in the movement of people and goods and in trade between the two countries.
The meeting reviewed the mechanisms and procedures required to reopen the crossing in line with applicable laws and regulations, and stressed completing operational, logistical and staffing arrangements, the same source said. No reopening date has yet been announced.
