Madar (Algiers) - The Czech Republic wants to double its supplies of Algerian gas from about 200 million cubic meters a year to 400 million, Reuters reported on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, citing the Czech prime minister's office, according to Algerian news site TSA.

The move comes during an official visit to Algeria by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis and Industry Minister Karel Havlicek. Havlicek told Czech news agency CTK on Monday evening that officials had given a "preliminary commitment" to extend the contract, the same source said.

In a statement on Tuesday, Sonatrach said its chief executive, Noureddine Daoudi, met CEZ board chairman Daniel Benes in Algiers on Monday to discuss the execution of the contract binding the two companies since 2024 and the possibilities for extending it.

The two companies signed a natural gas sale and purchase contract in 2024 to supply the Czech Republic via the pipeline linking Algeria and Italy; it was extended in 2025 for one additional year from October 1, 2025. The volumes and duration of any new extension have not been made public.
