Senegalese opposition protesters gather outside UN mission in New York

Senegalese opposition protesters gathered outside their country's permanent mission to the United Nations in New York as President Bassirou Diomaye Faye arrived to take part in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

The demonstrators chanted slogans against the president, criticising his performance, deteriorating economic and social conditions in Senegal, and the repercussions of the debt crisis.

They also denounced what they described as "betrayal" and criticised recent moves by political figures to join the president's camp. The protesters said the government had reneged on an agreement reached the previous year to improve wages and working conditions.
