Faye and Lavrov discuss bilateral ties and Macky Sall's UN candidacy

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York on Thursday, 24 September, to discuss cooperation between their countries and international issues, including peace and security and the selection of the next UN secretary-general.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, with former Senegalese president Macky Sall in attendance. Sall's candidacy for the UN post has the support of the Senegalese government.

The Senegalese presidency said the talks covered strengthening relations between Dakar and Moscow, international developments, and ways to support dialogue, peaceful solutions to conflicts and respect for the principles of the UN Charter.

Sall's attendance formed part of his campaign for the position of UN secretary-general, following Senegal's announcement in July of its official support for his candidacy.
