Madar (Niamey) - Niger's President, General Abdourahamane Tiani, on Monday, 19 October 2026 received Algeria's ambassador to Niger, Ahmed Saadi, accompanied by a large delegation of Algerian experts, for talks the envoy said were about hydrocarbons, the official Niger Press Agency (ANP) reported.

The meeting was attended by Environment, Water and Sanitation Minister Colonel Maizama Abdoulaye, presidential chief of staff and government spokesman Soumana Boubacar, Justice Minister Alio Daouda and Petroleum Minister Hamadou Tinni, the agency said.

"Today, the subject was hydrocarbons," the ambassador told reporters, calling the sector a flagship of bilateral cooperation. "Algeria has some experience in this field which it would like our Nigerien brothers to benefit from, like the Kafra well whose drilling the two prime ministers launched on 13 August," he said.

He added that Niger's head of state always gives "instructions for this cooperation, which I would call exemplary in Africa, to keep moving forward and cover all areas of interest to the two countries".

The meeting comes as Niamey faces a petrol shortage. Madar reported that the Nigerien authorities were expecting 30 million litres of petrol from Algeria within days, as part of emergency measures to tackle the crisis.
