Madar (Niamey) - Algeria sent a technical mission of officials and experts from its Ministry of Hydrocarbons, the Hydrocarbons Regulatory Authority (ARH) and the Sonatrach group to Niger from October 12 to 19, 2026, to provide technical support after the incident at the 'Gomri W-8' oil well in the Agadem block in the country's north-east, according to an Algerian Hydrocarbons Ministry statement carried on Tuesday by the daily Horizons.
The Algerian delegation held talks with Niger's petroleum and environment ministers on the state of the well and the emergency measures needed to bring the incident under control and limit its environmental impact.
At the end of its visit, the mission was received by Niger's president, Gen. Abdourahamane Tiani, who thanked Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for responding quickly to the request for assistance, the statement said.
Satellite imagery had revealed a methane leak from the well in the Agadem field. The Algerian statement did not say whether the leak has now been fully contained.
