Madar (Bamako) - Mali's university lecturer-researchers began a five-day strike on Monday, 26 October 2026, to demand payment of their research allowance, provided for in a text adopted in 2017 but whose amount and implementing terms have yet to be set, news site KOACI reported on Thursday, 29 October.

The strike was called by the National Union of Higher Education and Scientific Research (SNESUP), which is also demanding back pay owed since the adoption of the lecturer-researchers' statute.

According to the same source, several demands had already been settled through agreements with the authorities, notably on salary scales and arrears. The research allowance, however, remains unresolved despite new talks in 2025, which had led to the suspension of an earlier strike.

The union says it remains open to negotiations with the government. The strike is due to end on Friday, 30 October, but could be extended if no agreement is reached.
