Madar (N'Djamena) - Traditional authorities from Chad's 23 provinces will meet from 29 to 31 October 2026 in Mongo, in the centre of the country, for a national forum on conflict prevention and social cohesion organised by the High Council of Traditional Chieftaincies (HCCT), according to a statement published on Saturday, 24 October 2026 and reported by the Tchadinfos news site.

Held under the high patronage of Marshal Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the meeting aims to strengthen the role of traditional chiefs in mediating and settling community disputes. It will bring together government representatives, religious leaders, farmers' and herders' organisations, and representatives of women, young people and civil society.

Discussions will cover the community, land and farmer-herder conflicts affecting several regions, prevention and mediation mechanisms, and cooperation between traditional chieftaincies, the territorial administration and the defence and security forces. Seven ministries, including territorial administration, defence, public security and justice, will take part.

According to the organisers, the forum is expected to produce a roadmap, an early-warning system for conflicts and a commitment by traditional authorities to peace, and to lay the foundations of a permanent framework for dialogue between the HCCT and the government.

The meeting follows clashes between farmers and herders in Salamat province on the night of 18 to 19 October that left 12 dead according to a provisional toll, and a ban on two-wheelers in three sub-prefectures there. In the same province, the prefect of Aboudeia, Mahamat Soumaine Hassan, called on Sunday, 25 October in Breguite, in Daradir sub-prefecture, for strict respect of livestock corridors, during an awareness tour of the department's eight sub-prefectures he began on 21 October with six canton chiefs, the same site reported.
