Madar (Ouagadougou) - Burkina Faso's Food and Drug Administration (Faso FDA) announced, in a statement dated Friday 6 November 2026, a ban on the use and sale of "DENGUE-med", a product presented as a treatment for dengue fever, according to the Burkinabe news site leFaso.net.

The statement said the product currently circulating in the country has no marketing authorisation and does not appear in the 2026 national list of authorised pharmaceutical products and generic medicines, and that its quality, efficacy and safety have not been assessed by any competent authority.

The agency asked pharmacists, wholesalers and heads of health facilities to withdraw the product immediately from their shelves and stocks, quarantine it, declare the quantities they hold and the identity of their supplier to the Faso FDA or the regional health directorate, and refrain from prescribing, dispensing or recommending it.

Inspection teams will collect the stocks concerned, and inspections will be carried out in pharmacies, pharmaceutical depots and health facilities. Anyone found in possession of the product for sale or use after the statement's publication faces the "administrative and criminal penalties" provided for by the regulations, the text said.

The public was urged not to buy or use the product and to go to a health centre in case of fever, headache or joint and muscle pain. The agency warned against aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen when dengue is suspected "because of the increased risk of bleeding", and asked prescribers to report any adverse effects seen in patients who used the product.

Elsewhere in the Sahel, Chadian authorities announced on Wednesday 4 November a dengue toll of 18 deaths and 6,275 suspected cases.
