Madar (Algiers) - Algeria and Niger on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, signed a memorandum of understanding on military cooperation during a working visit by Niger's defence minister, Gen. Salifou Modi, at the head of a high-level military delegation, according to an Algerian defence ministry statement carried by the APS news agency.

Gen. Said Chanegriha, deputy defence minister and chief of staff of the National People's Army, received the Nigerien minister at army headquarters, saying the visit followed one Modi made "a few days ago" and that the army was fully ready to examine any Nigerien proposal to strengthen military and security cooperation. Modi praised the level of multidimensional coordination between the two armies.

In the evening, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received the Nigerien minister and his delegation, with Chanegriha, Presidency chief of staff Lounes Magramane and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf present, according to a Presidency statement cited by El Khabar.

The content of the memorandum was not disclosed. The military rapprochement comes days after Algiers sent Sonatrach experts to help Niamey contain an oil well eruption in Agadem.
