Madar (International) - US President Donald Trump declined on Thursday, October 29, 2026, to say whether he agreed with the outcome of Sunday's presidential election in Brazil, but called the contest a "disgrace", Al Jazeera English reported.
"I thought the election was a great embarrassment to the people of Brazil. I watched the election. I didn't take sides. I let it be. I was asked not to take sides by the president, the current president," Trump told reporters. "But when I watched what went down in Brazil, it was a disgrace... take a look at the market."
The remarks came a day after former Senator Flavio Bolsonaro and his family landed in Miami. The New York Times reported on Thursday that Trump and his administration aided the family's journey out of Brazil, and officials told the newspaper the US government would likely provide them permanent residency.
Bolsonaro lost Sunday's run-off to left-wing incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva by more than four million votes. The Brazilian real dropped 12 percent against the dollar in spot trading after the election.
Shortly after landing, Bolsonaro issued a statement saying he was "the true elected president of Brazil" and that the allegations against him were "a politically motivated witch-hunt". He asked the international community "not to normalise what is happening in Brazil" and said he would lead the opposition from the US. He did not provide evidence. His own Liberal Party said on Monday it accepted the result.
Brazil's Supreme Court had ordered him to surrender his passports so he could be investigated for embezzlement and money laundering. Although the two countries have had an extradition treaty for decades, it is unclear whether Washington would hand him over, or whether Brazilian authorities would indict him and request it. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court dispelled rumours that a search warrant had been issued for his home.
