Madar (International) - The number of migrants who died on the boat that reached the island of El Hierro in Spain's Canary Islands before dawn on Sunday, October 18, 2026, has risen to three, and six others were taken to hospital, according to the Canary Islands government's security and emergency coordination centre, as reported by Europa Press.
Health teams at the port assisted 131 people who were on board, including 25 women and 8 minors, after a Spanish maritime rescue vessel escorted the boat to the port of La Restinga, the centre said.
On Monday morning, October 19, a third boat carrying 145 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, including 132 men, 5 women and 8 minors, reached the same port shortly before 06:30 after being detected by Guardia Civil radar south of the island, according to maritime rescue sources quoted by the agency.
Canary Islands emergency services and the Red Cross assisted the new arrivals on the quayside. The sources did not say where the third boat had departed from.
A second boat carrying 177 people reached the island on Sunday after a nine-day crossing from M'bour in Senegal, according to its passengers.
