US Congressman Joe Wilson has called for the Polisario Front to be designated a foreign terrorist organisation and for sanctions on Algeria, which he accused of building up an arsenal of Russian weapons to stir unrest in North Africa and Europe.

In a post on his X account, Wilson said Russia's veto of a UN draft resolution on the Sahara was, in his words, part of efforts to destabilise the African continent, naming Moscow, Algiers, Tehran and the Polisario Front as those who benefit.

According to the congressman, the draft blocked by Russia aimed to extend the mandate of the UN mission in the Sahara and to pave the way for Moroccan sovereignty over the territory.

He also accused Algeria of backing the Polisario Front, claiming that Hezbollah trains its fighters.

Criticising Algerian policy, Wilson said Algeria could have achieved greater prosperity had its leaders chosen to steer the country towards a better future instead of what he described as supporting terrorism.

Russia had vetoed a US-drafted resolution on Western Sahara that included proposals to reduce the military component of the UN mission and to strengthen Morocco's autonomy plan as the basis for negotiations towards a political settlement of the nearly five-decade-old dispute.
