Madar (Rabat) - Morocco expects its total dam storage capacity to exceed 24 billion cubic meters by the end of 2027, according to the explanatory memorandum accompanying the draft 2027 Finance Bill, news site Hespress reported on Sunday, October 25, 2026.

Since 2020, Morocco has completed eight major dams, adding 1.89 billion cubic meters of storage capacity, the memorandum says. Five more dams have begun initial filling, providing another 746 million cubic meters and bringing the combined capacity of these facilities to about 2.64 billion cubic meters.

Construction is continuing on 14 major dams, and work has begun on six medium-sized facilities. Another major dam and the expansion of an existing one are planned for 2027. Under the 2022-2027 program covering 155 small and hillside dams, 24 have been completed and 32 are under construction.

Morocco also drilled 5,059 exploratory boreholes between 2020 and 2025 to assess groundwater resources. Water transfer projects include a connection between the Oued El Makhazine and Dar Khrofa dams to secure Tangier's drinking water supply, as well as the Sebou-Bouregreg transfer system supporting Rabat and Casablanca.

The government is also developing real-time water quality monitoring systems and reviewing the rules governing the allocation of dam water as part of efforts to strengthen water security, the report said.
