Madar (Nouakchott) - The National Rally for Reform and Development (Tawassoul), the largest opposition party, held simultaneous protest gatherings across Mauritania's regions on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, under the slogan of the "three noes": "no to a third term", "no to corruption and poor services" and "no to restrictions on freedoms", the German news agency DPA reported.

The gatherings are part of the protest activities the party launched for the new political season, to denounce what it describes as efforts by the ruling party and state officials to promote a constitutional amendment that would allow President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani to seek a third term.

Protesters called for the immediate release of "prisoners of opinion" and an end to rising prices and poor public services, and urged stepped-up mobilisation around the party's slogans.

Party president Hamadi Ould Sidi El Moctar told the press that the country suffers from "severe restrictions on freedoms", "widespread corruption in the workings of the state" and a "serious deterioration of services" that has worn citizens down. There was no official reaction at the time of writing. The party had announced the gatherings in advance.
