Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania's electricity company SOMELEC said in a statement on Monday evening, November 2, 2026, that a "limited" fire broke out in turbine No. 38 of the Boulenoir station (100 MW) at 18:12, forcing the station to be shut down immediately as a preventive safety measure, Sahara Medias reported.

The company said the fire followed thunderstorms and rain in the Dakhlet Nouadhibou region on Sunday evening, November 1.

Technical teams successfully isolated the damage on Monday morning: the affected turbine was disconnected and the rest of the station was fully restarted at 9:17 a.m. and is now operating "normally and regularly."

Rain gauges had recorded 10 mm in Nouadhibou on November 1 and 2, as rain fell across several regions, according to the interior ministry.
