Mauritania's navy rescued 134 migrants of several nationalities on Saturday after intercepting the boat carrying them at sea off Nouadhibou, on a journey towards the Canary Islands.

According to an army statement, the group comprised 118 men, 14 women and two children aboard a boat used for migrant smuggling.

The army said the operation was part of the navy's mission to protect lives in territorial waters, counter irregular migration, pursue smuggling networks and strengthen maritime security.
