Madar (Nouakchott) - Culture, arts, communication and parliamentary relations minister and government spokesman Mohamed Ould Bebbana said on Wednesday evening, October 21, 2026, that the government remains committed to its position in support of a peaceful, consensual solution under United Nations auspices on the question of the delimitation of the Lagouira area, adding that "this is exactly the current situation on this point", the news site Al-Akhbar reported.

At his first press conference, the new government's second, he stressed that nothing more should be read into the issue, "such as the country having been asked for concessions", simply because some had discussed it in a media forum or a newspaper, with nothing new in the file.

The spokesman said Mauritania's aim in clarifying the borders is to avoid any ambiguity that could have security, legal or economic consequences.

The recent report to the Security Council by the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, included Mauritania's call for a committee to clarify, by consensus, the final and permanent international borders of the disputed territory. Nouakchott has kept to its "positive neutrality" ahead of the vote on the MINURSO mandate.
