Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania's Delegate General for Civil Security and Crisis Management, Major General Abou El Maali El Hadi Sidi Ould Amar, on Friday 6 November 2026 opened a watch and operations room at the delegation's headquarters in Nouakchott, equipped by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the Sahel resilience project funded by the government of Sweden, the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI) reported.
According to the agency, the room is intended to strengthen the operational capacity of national institutions in disaster prevention, anticipation and risk management, with modern equipment that centralises risk information, improves its analysis and strengthens coordination among the institutions involved in crisis management.
Ould Amar said the ongoing cooperation with UNDP aims "to move from reaction to anticipating and forecasting crises". He said the room, fitted with software and technology for visualising events on the ground, will be used to monitor emergencies and analyse how they develop, to train staff and to prepare the data needed to help the authorities take decisions.
UNDP resident representative in Mauritania Mansour Ndiaye said the room relies on a proactive approach based on providing information "in real time" to ensure a rapid response. He stressed the importance of training, field simulations and the exchange of experience, and reaffirmed the programme's commitment to keeping the facility running over time.
The Sahel resilience project, implemented by UNDP with Swedish funding, covers seven countries: Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal, the agency said.
