The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has reported a worsening food crisis among Malian refugees in Mauritania's Hodh Ech Chargui region, where the number of people affected exceeded 112,000 between June and August 2026.
The organization said about 38,400 refugees had reached the emergency phase of food insecurity, while the share facing crisis or worse conditions rose to 40%, compared with 18% in the same period last year.
The deterioration comes amid a growing number of refugees and pressure on resources and essential services, despite a relative improvement in Mauritania's overall food situation, with the number of people affected nationwide falling to just over 500,000 from about 590,000 in the same period of 2025.
