Madar (Johannesburg) - South Africa's Electoral Commission (IEC) said on Saturday, November 7, 2026, that it would announce the final results of the local government elections at 6pm local time (16:00 GMT) on Sunday, November 8, the South African Government News Agency reported.
IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya told a briefing at the National Results Operations Centre in Midrand that by 3pm on Saturday the commission had received 197 objections, of which 54 were dismissed, 8 withdrawn and 2 upheld. The commission "is now engaged in determining objections that are material to the result of the election", he said, according to the agency.
Results processing had been completed in six provinces - Free State, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Limpopo - while it was still under way in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Emfuleni, Rustenburg, Msunduzi and eThekwini and was due to finish on Saturday evening, SAnews said.
With about 90% of votes counted, the governing African National Congress (ANC) had nearly 31% and was expected to lose its outright majority in all eight major metros, including Johannesburg and Pretoria, AFP reported. The Democratic Alliance (DA) was second with around a quarter of the vote, while former president Jacob Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party was set to finish third, ahead of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Turnout was about 54.5% of 29.2 million registered voters, up from 46% in 2021, according to the agency.
