Madar (Accra) - Ghana has initiated discussions with Russia's State Nuclear Energy Corporation, Rosatom, on building the country's first nuclear power station, according to Ghanaian media cited by Africanews on Saturday, October 31, 2026, following bilateral talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.
The two leaders met in Moscow a day after the Russia-Africa summit, where Mahama said Ghana was pursuing a diversified energy mix to secure its power grid.
Separately, Russian aluminium giant Rusal on Thursday signed a deal with the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) to launch joint ventures on bauxite mining in Ghana of up to five million tonnes a year.
The project covers a mine at the Nyinahin deposit in the Ashanti Region, with estimated reserves of more than 100 million tonnes of bauxite. A second phase provides for an alumina refinery with an annual capacity of 1.2 million tonnes, through two joint ventures in which Rusal will hold a majority stake, the company said.
Ghana is a major exporter of gold, cocoa and oil. Earlier this month it announced it would formally apply to join BRICS, and Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said on Wednesday that Russia "strongly supports" the application.
