Madar (Niamey) - Niger's President, General Abdourahamane Tiani, has called on judges and judicial staff to strengthen their role in defending the country's sovereignty and interests, particularly in international legal and economic disputes.

He was speaking on Thursday in Niamey at the opening of the 2026-2027 judicial year, attended by Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, government and judicial officials, and delegations from Burkina Faso and Mali.

Tiani said that delivering justice in the name of the people is one expression of national sovereignty, calling for the state's legal expertise to be developed to deal with international disputes, for financial compensation owed to Niger under court rulings to be recovered, and for the principle of state sovereignty enshrined in the UN Charter to be defended.

He also stressed the need to strengthen the judiciary's human, material and technical resources, urging its staff to make protecting the country's higher interests a priority, as part of what the transitional authorities call the "refoundation" project.
