Chad and France have signed a declaration of intent aimed at establishing a framework for closer defence cooperation and strengthening the capabilities of Chad's armed forces. The document was signed during Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno's working visit to Paris on Tuesday, October 13.
The two countries' defence ministers signed the document in the presence of Deby and French President Emmanuel Macron. It covers training, expertise, defence industries and technology, according to French and Chadian media reports.
Both sides said the declaration outlines their prospective defence cooperation but does not amount to a new defence agreement.
The step is part of efforts to reshape military relations after Chad terminated its military cooperation agreement with France in late 2024 and French troops withdrew from the country in early 2025.
