Russia's ambassador to Niger, Viktor Voropayev, suggested that outside actors might have coordinated the mutiny in the capital, Niamey, in an interview published by TASS on 29 August 2026. He did not directly accuse a country.
In a separate TASS report published that day, Voropayev said the command of Air Base 101, inside Niamey airport, had requested support from personnel of Russia's Africa Corps. He said several young officers had taken part in the mutiny.
He added that the chief of staff of Niger's armed forces, the army chief of staff and the commander of Air Base 101 had visited the Russian forces' deployment site and thanked Africa Corps personnel for helping them counter the mutiny.
The mutiny unfolded during the night of 28-29 August at Air Base 101 inside Niamey airport. Contemporary reporting described clashes between presidential guards and mutinous soldiers.
