Madar (International) - Kyiv came under a new missile attack on Wednesday night, October 21, 2026, with several houses hit and six people injured, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said, hours after Russia said it was "ready in principle" to resume peace talks, the BBC reported.
The Russian announcement followed a meeting of about three hours in St Petersburg between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, who had met Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky in Oslo on Tuesday. Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov suggested a new round could be held around 10 November in Abu Dhabi, stressing that talks must focus on "building a security system for Russia and Ukraine after the end of the conflict".
Ushakov said the US ideas were not very "useful" and that Putin had told Witkoff Russian troops were advancing across the front line and held a "strategic initiative", a claim disputed by Ukraine and its European allies. Three-way talks had been paused since February.
Witkoff described the talks as "constructive", while Jared Kushner, who joined by video link, said there was "a real opportunity to move beyond this war". Trump said the world was "maybe now the closest we've been" to ending the war.
Zelensky told Fox News he would accept a deal freezing the war along the current front line. "Freeze and stop. And of course this is minimum what we need from Russia today," he said, adding that security guarantees for Ukraine could be discussed after that.
