Mauritania's UN representative meets Western Sahara envoy

Mauritania's representative to the United Nations, Cheikhna Ould Nenni, has said he met Staffan de Mistura, the UN secretary-general's personal envoy for Western Sahara, at the organisation's headquarters in New York.

In a Facebook post, Ould Nenni said the meeting took place on Friday, 9 October, after Thursday's Security Council meeting. At that session, de Mistura briefed the Council on his activities and meetings since the adoption of US-backed Resolution 2797 in 2025. As described in Ould Nenni's account, the resolution provides for the autonomy proposal to serve as a basis for negotiations involving Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria and Mauritania.

The Mauritanian diplomat said the ongoing discussions included renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, MINURSO.

He added that Christopher Thornton, head of the personal envoy's office, and Boukari Soumare, a counsellor at Mauritania's UN mission, also attended the meeting.
