Mauritania's national solidarity and anti-exclusion agency, TAAZOUR, launched a programme for the Assaba region in Kiffa on Sunday, October 11. It aims to support income-generating activities and widen low-income households' access to essential services.
The economic component provides for 67 community shops, 58 grain mills, 47 solar-powered refrigerators and ten means of transport. It also includes 60 hours of machinery hire for land preparation and rehabilitation, according to the details announced at the launch.
The services component includes plans for seven water facilities, four health posts, two educational facilities and a solar-power station. These are components of the announced programme, which also aims to narrow gaps in access to services between urban and rural areas.
At the launch, TAAZOUR's delegate-general, Sidi Ould Moulay Zeine, also outlined earlier interventions under the region's emergency programme for universal access to basic services, including classrooms and health posts in Kankoussa and Barkéol. The new programme combines support for local economic activity with service projects, while local elected representatives called for implementation to be closely monitored.
