Mauritanian lawmakers and experts discussed ways to strengthen parliamentary scrutiny of migration and refugee-protection policies at a workshop in Nouakchott on Monday, October 12. The National Assembly organised the event with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

The one-day programme includes a presentation of the national migration-management strategy and discussion of how to activate the parliamentary group responsible for the issue. It focuses on monitoring public-policy implementation and assessing results, according to the Mauritanian News Agency.

The Assembly's first vice-president advocated an approach combining control of migration flows, respect for human rights and action on the causes of irregular migration. Yacoub Salem Vall, the minister delegate for decentralisation and local development, also emphasised the issue's security, development, economic and social dimensions.

The parliamentary group's chair said he hoped the workshop would produce a roadmap defining its priorities and monitoring tools. Participants also discussed coordination among lawmakers, government departments, experts and partners. The work concerns oversight and its methods, rather than the announcement of a new migration law.
