Prime Minister-designate Mokhtar Ould Djay pledged to begin preparing a proposal for a new government immediately after President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani asked him to form it. He said the future cabinet needed the political and technical competence to continue implementing the president's "My Ambition for the Nation" programme.
Speaking after being reappointed prime minister, hours after submitting his resignation, Ould Djay said the new government would need to address the repercussions of the ongoing global crisis. He highlighted strengthening the social safety net to help lower-income groups cope with its effects.
He said the next government's priorities would include creating fresh momentum and giving young people real opportunities for training, employment, participation and empowerment, in both urban and rural areas. He also emphasised advancing local development in towns and inland regions.
Ould Djay said he would carry out the president's instructions by preparing a proposed cabinet that met those requirements and submitting it to President Ghazouani as soon as possible, ahead of the new government's appointment.
The prime minister-designate described the president's confidence as precious and as a responsibility entrusted to him. He said he hoped to live up to that confidence and fulfil his duties to the best of his ability.
He also expressed his thanks and gratitude to President Ghazouani for renewing his confidence in him and asking him to prepare a proposal for the next government.
