Madar (Tunis) - Tunisia's government has mobilized TND 150 million in bank financing to allow the National Oil Office (ONH) to buy olive oil from producers during the 2026-2027 season, under measures adopted on Friday, October 23, 2026, by a restricted ministerial council chaired by the head of government, Tunisian news site Webdo reported on Saturday, October 24.
An additional TND 20 million is earmarked as subsidized loans for small farmers through the Tunisian Solidarity Bank (BTS), alongside a TND 100 million financing line covering 2027-2030.
The package includes a storage program of up to 60,000 tonnes of olive oil for three months, with premiums capped at TND 20 million. The ONH's own storage capacity was put at 100,000 tonnes, up from 90,000 tonnes last season.
The share of sea freight costs covered by the state for packaged olive oil exports will also rise from 50% to 60%, to support sales of packaged products abroad.
Webdo noted that the storage program's effect on prices actually paid to producers will depend on how it is implemented, the volumes involved and the pace of purchases.
