Madar (Rabat) - Five people were killed and others suffered injuries of varying severity when a passenger bus overturned at the entrance to the commune of Tagounite in Morocco's southeastern Zagora province on the morning of Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Moroccan news site Hespress reported.

According to a statement from the public prosecutor's office at the Zagora Court of First Instance, carried by the site, the accident happened at around 6 a.m. when a bus travelling from Marrakech to M'Hamid El Ghizlane overturned with 26 passengers on board. The initial toll was four dead and 22 injured.

The toll later rose to five after a critically injured passenger died, local sources told Hespress. Two critically injured passengers were transferred to the university hospital in Marrakech, while three others remain in intensive care at Zagora provincial hospital, according to medical sources.

The prosecutor's office ordered an investigation into the circumstances and causes of the crash, continued monitoring of the injured and arrangements for the burial of the victims, saying legal action would depend on the findings. Royal Gendarmerie officers are trying to establish whether speed, a technical failure or human error was involved.

The authorities have not released the victims' identities.
