Madar (Rabat) - Four Moroccan truck drivers have been hospitalized following suspected mosquito-borne infections contracted during trips to Senegal in October, according to the General Union of International and National Transport Professionals, Moroccan news site Hespress reported on Friday, October 23, 2026.

Union president Cherki El Hachimi told Hespress that the drivers are being treated in hospitals in Dakhla and Agadir after developing serious complications. The illnesses have not been identified and no official medical diagnosis has been disclosed, the outlet said.

The union urged Moroccan truck drivers carrying goods to sub-Saharan Africa to obtain the necessary vaccinations before departure and called on the Health Ministry to set up a medical clinic at the Guerguerat crossing, along with an ambulance and screening facilities to provide emergency help to drivers travelling through high-risk areas.

The union also warned that restrictions on routes through Mali, rising fuel costs and prolonged border inspections in Mauritania are worsening conditions for Moroccan transport operators.
