Madar (Nouakchott) - Rain that has fallen on Zouerate since Tuesday night has flooded several streets and homes, and the governor of Tiris Zemmour, Idriss Demba Kourera, toured the affected neighbourhoods on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, with the regional crisis management committee, the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI) reported.

The governor inspected operations to pump out and drain standing water, saying the necessary machinery is now available thanks to the combined efforts of elected officials, the gold miners' federation and the national mining company SNIM.

He said operations are continuing and that "the situation is under control", with the authorities following up on those affected. No damage toll has been announced so far.

Update, Thursday, October 22: the governor continued his tour of affected districts for a second day, including Nimrouat, Bakr, El Hit and Telcom. He told AMI that the damage recorded was "limited", mainly water seeping into some homes, that no lives were lost, and urged residents not to worry.
