Mauritania's under-20 football team lost 2-1 to Senegal on Friday, October 16, 2026, in the Malian capital Bamako, in the two sides' first Group B match of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone A tournament for the age group.
Mauritania took the lead in the 13th minute through Imam Dine Sow before Senegal striker Moussa Gueye turned the game around with goals in the 39th and 83rd minutes, according to the Senegalese Press Agency (APS) and the Senego news site. Senegal's Amadou Mboup suffered a head injury during the match.
Senegal, the defending champions, face Sierra Leone on Monday after Guinea-Bissau withdrew from the tournament and the schedule was changed, APS said. Group A comprises hosts Mali, Guinea, Liberia and Gambia.
The tournament runs until October 30. Its two finalists will qualify for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Ghana in 2027.
