Madar (Nouakchott) - Former minister of culture, arts, communication and relations with parliament El Houssein Ould Meddou has reviewed what he described as the main reforms and achievements of his time at the head of the sector, including expanded cultural activities, improved infrastructure and the regularisation of staff at public media outlets.

In a post titled "A letter of thanks and gratitude", Ould Meddou said his tenure saw the drafting of the country's first cultural policy, hundreds of festivals held across the country, and programmes to support publishing, writing and heritage protection, as well as projects for cultural spaces and museum upgrades.

In the media sector, he cited the regularisation of 1,865 contract staff at public institutions and an increase in the private press support fund to 400 million old ouguiyas, along with measures to organise the profession and strengthen national languages in the media.

He also pointed to expanded cultural cooperation abroad and a stronger Mauritanian presence in international bodies, saying the results were the fruit of collective work. He thanked President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and the ministry's staff and expressed confidence in his successor's ability to continue the work.
