Madar (Nouakchott) - Clean-up operations on the Nouakchott beach, part of the national cleanliness campaign, ended on Saturday, October 24, 2026, along a 33-kilometre coastal stretch between the Autonomous Port of Nouakchott, known as the "Port of Friendship", and the "Al Mourabitoune" conference centre, the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI) reported.

Some 2,000 people from several ministries and civil society took part. More than 230 tonnes of waste, mostly plastic, were collected and removed, while the remaining quantities are still being taken to a waste treatment site.

The minister of environment and sustainable development said the campaign answered President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani's call to clean the beach and tackle the growing build-up of waste.

Building on this experience, her ministry will prepare a sustainable plan to keep the beach clean and protect its biodiversity, along with leisure spaces to welcome visitors, she added.
