Madar (Nouakchott) - A Mauritanian member of parliament has called for regular and accessible university transport for students, saying rising travel costs are adding to the burden on some 30,000 students at the University of Nouakchott.

In a Facebook post, the MP said improving student transport is an essential part of investing in young people's education, stressing that the university should provide an environment suited to learning rather than adding to students' burdens.

His call follows protests held by university students in Nouakchott on Thursday to demand better university transport and suitable means to travel in decent conditions.
