Madar (Nouakchott) - The Mauritanian Journalists' Union and Morocco's National Press Union have called for a stand against digital campaigns targeting relations between the two peoples, warning against the use of disinformation and anonymous accounts to spread hostility and incitement.
In a joint statement, the two unions said some content in circulation goes beyond legitimate criticism into insults and generalisations, stressing the need to verify information before publishing it and not to hold an entire people responsible for individual actions or opinions.
They also urged digital platforms and the relevant authorities to tackle content inciting hatred and violence while protecting freedom of expression, and called on citizens to avoid sharing unreliable news and provocative content, and to strengthen media cooperation between the two countries against hate speech.
