Madar (Nouakchott) - Mauritania's National Higher Education Union has suspended a sit-in it had planned for November 4 at Freedom Square in Nouakchott, to make room for dialogue and efforts to meet lecturers' demands.

In a statement, the union said the suspension did not mean dropping its demands, chief among them land plots for lecturers who have not received any, pay rises, a better pension scheme, a review of the texts governing higher education and a stronger place for scientific research.

It said its stance on future protests would depend on the outcome of the dialogue and the response to its list of demands, and that it reserved the right to resume action if needed.

The decision followed a meeting of the executive bureau on Saturday evening, at which the union's secretary general reviewed the latest developments.
