Madar (Nouakchott) - President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani met on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with the prime minister, several ministers in charge of service sectors and the governors of Nouakchott's three wilayas to assess progress on works and complete preparations for bringing 28 health centres in the capital into service, the presidency said.

The centres are part of the emergency programme for the development of Nouakchott. The health minister had reviewed arrangements to complete their medical staffing ahead of their opening, including the results of the selection of chief doctors.

During the meeting, the president instructed the government to bring the 28 health centres into service "in the coming few days", complete the necessary staff, equipment and medical supplies, and ensure that health workers are present and fulfil their duties, according to a document published by the presidency in the evening.

The directives also cover improving patient care and bringing health services closer to people to ease pressure on major hospitals, organising specialist consultations and strengthening links between primary care and hospitals, adopting a digital system to manage patients, consultations and medical stock, as well as maintaining buildings and equipment, rationalising resources, coordinating the sectors involved, and setting responsibilities and deadlines with on-the-ground monitoring of implementation.
