Mauritania opens 150-bed school boarding facility in Aleg

Education and Education System Reform Minister Houda Babah opened a boarding facility for school pupils in Aleg, the capital of Brakna, on Thursday, October 15. Administrative and security officials and local elected representatives attended the opening.

The facility has 150 beds and provides accommodation and meals for lower- and upper-secondary pupils, according to the Education Ministry.

It also offers classes in mathematics, science, physics, French and Islamic education to help improve pupils' performance, the minister said. She explained that the project was carried out jointly by her ministry, the TAAZOUR agency and the Food Security Commission.

Babah said the facility would promote equal opportunities and reduce the social and geographical barriers that prevent pupils from continuing their education.

She added that similar facilities were being developed in other regions and in Nouakchott, with a combined capacity of 500 beds, half of them reserved for girls.
