Madar (Dakar) - Mauritania's Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mohamed Ould Abdel Fattah, said his new responsibilities will allow him to keep following the files of the Senegal River Basin Development Organisation (OMVS) and joint projects with Senegal, first among them the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project, in a statement aired by Senegal's state television after he was received by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in Dakar on Friday, October 16, 2026, according to the Al-Akhbar news agency.

The audience marked the end of his term as OMVS high commissioner, a post he had held since November 2022. He said he would follow these files on Mauritania's behalf as energy and petroleum minister, expressing confidence that they would keep advancing under the guidance of the two presidents.

Ould Abdel Fattah conveyed to the Senegalese president the greetings of President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the current chair of the OMVS Conference of Heads of State and Government. He thanked the Senegalese authorities for their support, as well as the Conference, the Council of Ministers and the organisation's staff, and said he was confident the next team would build on its achievements and launch new projects.

Ould Abdel Fattah was appointed energy and petroleum minister in the government announced by the presidency on October 10, a post he previously held from 2016 to 2020. The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gas field lies on the maritime border between Mauritania and Senegal, which signed an agreement in February 2018 to develop it jointly.
